Vatopaidi’s main church (katholikon) dates to10th century. Additionally, excavations unearthed an older basilica from the time of the byzantine emperor Theodosius the Great (4th century).
The church contains many early Christian architectural and iconographical symbols which transport the onlooker and, moreover, the one who enters into a world of the past.
Its architectural figure originates mainly from the vision of the three modern founders: St. Nicholas, Athanasius and Anthony, three noblemen from Adrianople.
