We often delude ourselves into thinking we’re patient and meek because we don’t deign to respond to a barbed comment from another person. But we should be aware that, while we’re maintaining this acrimonious silence, or are making a disrespectful gesture, we’re essentially mocking the others and irritating them with the impassive mask we’re wearing. Much more so, in fact, than if we’d reacted angrily in the first place.
