We don’t think we’re anything special

The passion which attacks people until the last moments of their life and which, when it takes over, makes people’s hearts more callous and dreary, is that of ambition, with the synonymous passions of pride and egotism. Only a humble outlook can withstand this passion. And this humble attitude can be acquired only by those who are obedient to Christ. Obedience shows our reference to God the Father and our dependence on him: that we have no confidence in ourselves, that we don’t think we’re anything special, and that we believe that anything good about us comes from God.
