Only God and the soul are of value
10 April 2023The spiritual life is the only real life; everything else is material. Our body’s material, dust borrowed from the earth. The spiritual life is our unceasing effort to become worthy of the divine breath which is within us.
In the eyes of God, the human soul is a treasure more valuable than the whole of the material world. Care for the soul is most important and diligence for the soul is prudent.
Many people at death’s door have been anxious for hours, unable to depart this life until they’ve confessed their sins to a priest. Our God is the God of mercy and kindness and he desires the salvation of all people. But how are people to be saved if they don’t make the distinction between sin and God’s righteousness, if they don’t renounce sin and don’t acknowledge God’s righteousness?
Whatever people are carrying within their souls will be what they take to God’s judgement. If it’s righteousness that’s what they’ll take; if it’s sin, so be it. God awaits the repentance of all mortals, and repentance involves the confession of our sins.
Nothing is of value except God and the soul. God’s mercy is poured out on people only in this life, whereas at the dread judgement, mercy will be replaced by God’s righteousness.
The most important of God’s gifts to us is our god-like soul. At the appropriate time, God will ask to have this gift back. There’s nothing we can return to God in place of our soul. The soul’s the queen and all other things are servants. God won’t accept a servant instead of a king, nor does he want the transient in place of the eternal. So what will sinners offer in exchange for their soul?
As long s people are in the body, in this world, they boast about the many secular values. But when they leave the body, then they realize that, apart from God and the soul, there aren’t any other values. Then they won’t be able to even think about redeeming the soul or swapping something for it. Oh, how terrible is the position of the sinful soul when the threads attaching it to this world are severed and it finds itself before God, naked and stooped, poor and bereft, in the world of the spirits.
