The First Kenyan Bishop
22 February 2015Modern missionaries are very sensitive to the culture they enter when baptizing and teaching the Orthodox faith. Listen to this interesting conversation between Fr. Chris and Fr. Robert Lawrence, pastor of St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church in Mooresvilles, NC. Having participated in two OCMC short-term mission trips to Africa, Fr. Lawrence shares his experiences and his friendship with His Grace Neophytos of Nitria, the first native Kenyan Bishop. If you feel strongly about our Lord’s command to “make disciples of all nations,” you will enjoy this interview.
On December 21, 2014, His Grace Neophytos, the first native Kenyan Bishop, was ordained Bishop of Nitria by His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. In this video, the new bishop is being celebrated as a Nandi tribal elder. This is a great honor from the tribe, recognizing the Church’s authority over their lives.
And keep listening as we hear from Maria Logus, Esq., President of the National Philoptochos Society, the women’s philanthropic society of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. She shares her vision for the coming years and the challenges the organization faces. Ms. Logus affirms that acts of charity do not distract us; rather, they enhance us.
This program is produced in partnership with OCN
The Orthodox Christian Network produces a wide variety of multimedia resources for Orthodox Christians and seekers in three languages: English, Greek, and Spanish. It is an agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States. Founded nearly 20 years ago as a radio ministry, it continues to produce “Come Receive the Light,” a weekly radio show, and has expanded into a variety of online offerings: a weekly video newscast, a variety of podcasts, three Internet radio stations, a website and a very popular social media presence, especially on Facebook. OCN strives to work in collaboration with all Orthodox organizations and churches to communicate the message of God’s love in Jesus Christ and to strengthen the Orthodox Church in the digital age.
