Pemptousia FM: The meaning of the Easter Homily of St. John Chrysostom

27 April 2015

Dr. Bruce Beck

We listen to the Easter homily of St. John Chrysostom every year, but do we know what it means?  Why do we shout back, “It was embittered” in the middle of the night?  We contacted Dr. Bruce Beck, Assistant Professor of New Testament at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and Director of the Pappas Patristic Institute, to offer insight to the Biblical references in the sermon.  Listen as Fr. Chris and Dr. Bruce discuss the nuances of our rich theology and one the most listened-to homilies.

But first, we have invited Despina Koulianos, a member of the Atlanta Metropolis Philoptochos, the women’s philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Church, to share news of a camp for children on the Autism Spectrum.   This is a family event and will be held at the Diakonia Retreat Center, in Salem, SC on Memorial Weekend, May 22-25 2015.

The Orthodox Christian Network produces a wide variety of multimedia resources for Orthodox Christians and seekers in three languages: English, Greek, and Spanish. It is an agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States. Founded nearly 20 years ago as a radio ministry, it continues to produce “Come Receive the Light,” a weekly radio show, and has expanded into a variety of online offerings: a weekly video newscast, a variety of podcasts, three Internet radio stations, a website and a very popular social media presence, especially on Facebook. OCN strives to work in collaboration with all Orthodox organizations and churches to communicate the message of God’s love in Jesus Christ and to strengthen the Orthodox Church in the digital age.
