The most unfair and the fairest

Envy is the passion of the malicious soul which is consumed with jealousy when it sees other people prospering. It’s spitefully critical of anything good that others enjoy. It’s the root of all evils, the source of all calamities and a breeding-ground for iniquities. Of all the passions, it’s the most unfair and the fairest: in the first instance it’s particularly galling for people who are good; in the second it consumes those who suffer from it.
