Excessive torment

Repentance means reconciliation with the Lord, through acts of virtue which are the opposite of our transgressions. It means cleansing of the conscience; it means deliberate fortitude in the face of all our afflictions; it means the greatest torment for the stomach (through fasting), and striking the soul with the greatest awareness.
