The Fathers say give your mind the task of praying unceasingly and it’ll never be deprived of divine light. Our Orthodox Church has this method of prayer. The single-line prayer of the heart, ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me’ sounds easy, but is difficult to apply. It requires a struggle, but yields much spiritual fruit. When the name of Christ is repeated in people’s minds, it sanctifies them and gives them a spiritual task, so that impure and wicked thoughts are expelled. Prayer was the main task of the mind for those in paradise.
