Important and necessary

11 November 2022

In the martyrdoms of the saints we can see that, although the saints were sad, perturbed, persecuted and under threat of their lives, when they were being led to martyrdom- young children, little girls, elderly, very old- they nevertheless went to their death in utter and profound peace. Everything external may have been against them, but there was peace in their heart, not only for themselves but also for those around them. This is why, on the graves of the first martyrs, there was the inscription: ‘Fell asleep in peace’, precisely because the martyrs went to their deaths in utter peace. What an important and necessary thing this is today.

Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol
