The Harrowing of Hell – An Epic Poem by J.S. Jackson
6 April 2023JONATHAN JACKSON (J.S. JACKSON) RELEASES NEW BOOK
THE HARROWING OF HELL
WHICH EXPLORES CHRIST’S DESCENT INTO HADES
The Harrowing of Hell is the latest book by poet and artist Jonathan Jackson (J.S. Jackson). Research for this Epic Poem began over twelve years ago, while the author was studying the history of the Christian faith. This quest eventually led Mr. Jackson and his family into the Orthodox Church. For the next ten years, the author prayerfully studied and researched the Scriptures, Holy Tradition, and the writings of the Church Fathers, to align the poem with the Church’s vision of Christ’s Descent into Hades. He also consulted with many fathers on the Holy Mountain about the content and theological vision of the book.
What happened between Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection? The Harrowing of Hell is a poetic-vision of Christ’s invasion of Hell to destroy the power of Hades and rescue the fallen.
The events imagined in this book have been revered for centuries. Christ’s Descent into Hades is portrayed in medieval art, proclaimed in Ancient Creeds and revealed in the New Testament itself. This cosmic event plays a significant role in the redemption story, but it has largely been lost to our modern culture.

This haunting Epic Poem engages the imagination, all the while, rendering a faithful depiction of Christ, as revealed in the New Testament and Eastern Church Fathers. The Harrowing of Hell is now available on Amazon, along with a dramatic audiobook, read by theauthor and featuring an original music score on Audible: https://a.co/d/7KC5QHz The book also features haunting original illustrations by Anastasiya Chybireva-Fender.
The author’s hope is that this Epic Poem will assist the reader in a prayerful meditation on the Mercy of God and the lengths the Light will go to rescue us from the darkness.
The Harrowing of Hell was published during the season of Great Lent as an invitation for it to become a seasonal reading for individuals and families, during this mystical time where the faithful experience the bright-sadness of our repentance and await the glorious Resurrection of Christ. Many heroes have risen to the challenge, only One has descended.

Book Endorsements:
Descensus Christi ad Inferos. Christ’s descent into hell. The ancient creeds teach it. The Church Fathers wrote of it. Modern scholars debate it. Now, Jonathan Jackson unfolds the transforming reality. He brings a mystic’s depth, an actor’s emersion, and a musician’s lyricism to the page. We learn. We are filled. We are changed. Thank God for J.S. Jackson’s The Harrowing of Hell.

J.S. Jackson has truly created a 21st Century parallel to Dante’s Divine Comedy and Milton’s Paradise Lost/Regained. Using the backdrop of an ‘adventure story’ somewhat of the ilk of Lord of the Rings, Jackson has weaved in the important threads of theology masterfully.
—Hon Rev Dr Lynn Arnold AO
The Harrowing of Hell does not flinch at the thought of the God of Light slain by darkness. Rather, Jackson’s sacred imagination casts a vision of the most powerful and most intimate jailbreak ever executed. The Harrowing of Hell invites readers of all faith backgrounds to meditate on a weighty question. What answer would we give to a love that does not minimize or forget the power of our guilt and shame?
