One hand builds, the other destroys

Alms-giving is a good and God-pleasing virtue, if, at the same time, you make sure you free your heart of pride, wickedness, envy, greed, deceit and the other passions. Unless people make an effort to cleanse their heart and if they put their trust simply in their works of charity, then they’re not much better off. Because what they build with one hand, they knock down with the other.
